Board and advisory took more than half the window
Board and advisory appointments took 55 of the 103 executive moves recorded between 18 and 21 August. More of the window went to governance than to running the business day to day, which is not the usual split.
Plain director appointments made up 29 of the 55, the largest single title in the window. Eight more arrived in classified board seats, the staggered slots public companies use to spread their election cycles across several years. Six were recorded simply as board member, one carried an audit committee designation, and the remaining eight sat across other board and advisory titles.
Composition is the interesting part
A classified seat is filled on a clock the company set years earlier, so those eight say more about the calendar than about last week. An audit committee place is a different matter, and so is the pattern underneath the totals: 38 organisations took at least one board seat, and seven of them took more than one. Boards adding two or three people at once are usually responding to something rather than topping up.
Finance sat close behind the board count. 25 of the 103 moves were finance seats and 13 of those were at chief financial officer level. Set against 74 organisations in the window, that is a concentration worth watching, particularly where a chief financial officer appointment and a new director land at the same company inside the same few days.
Appointments outran departures
Direction of travel was one way. Appointments outran departures and retirements by 73 to 28. Two moves in the entire window carried an interim title, against a previous window where interim cover and unplanned exits were the story. Companies were hiring permanently rather than buying time.
What the window does not show is why. These are appointments as they were announced, not the reasoning behind them, and four working days is a short base for a trend. The finance concentration is the part worth carrying into next week, when finance seats come up in the rotation anyway.
